Tools for sharpening knives
There are many tools to sharpen knives on the market because
it is only a matter of time before the knife you are using becomes boring and
needs to be sharpened. Basically for sharpening a handmade Damascus hunting knives you have
to grind small pieces of blade. Even if taking a professional sharpener would
be the easiest way to sharpen the knife, you can also use a tool to sharpen
knives like a stone, a steel or a sharpener.
Using a stone
A sharpening stone is a very abrasive stone that you can
easily buy. They are available in a variety of shapes and sizes. The average
cost is between 15.00 and 40.00 USD. The stone must be hard enough to remove
part of the blade surface when the blade crosses the stone. A lot of people
prefer the abrasiveness of a diamond stone, but almost any hard stone also has
concrete.
There are different opinions about whether the stone should
be wet or dry when sharpening a knife. Since knives usually require sharpness
every six months (depending on how often they are used), you can try to sharpen
it first with a dry stone and then use the wet method the next time. Place the
side of the knife on the stone and push it evenly through the stone. Now turn
the knife over and push the other side of the blade through the stone. Repeat
this method until the blade is sharp. Use a leather strap to rub the blade and
then rinse.
Using a steel
A steel for sharpening or a steel knife, as they are
commonly called, is a long piece of cylindrical steel attached to a handle. The
steels come from a variety of lengths and the average cost is between 15.00 and
40.00 USD> diamond and ceramic steels usually cost a little more.
Steel works the same way as stone by removing the blade
pieces and creating a new edge. Place the bevel of the knife at an angle of 10
to 20 degrees against the tip of the sharpening steel. Bring the knife down and
through the steel. Now place the blade on the back of the steel and lower and
cross to sharpen the other side. Continue repeating these steps until the knife
is clear. Remember to keep a constant angle along the edge of the blade.
Regardless of what you've seen in movies, this movement does not have to be
done quickly. It is the angle that is important and not the speed. Again, rub
the blade and rinse the knife.
Using a pull through or electric pencil sharpener
An electric passer or pencil sharpener is the easiest to use
because it is not necessary to determine the angles. Most have a "V"
slot that automatically provides a consistent angle for blade sharpening. It is
recommended that you read the manufacturer's instructions for using an electric
or tensile sharpener, as operation will vary from model to model.
There are some models available and the cost varies between
50.00 and 200.00 USD. They are more expensive than stones and steels, but it's
worth it. Any decent electric pencil sharpener will not only sharpen your
blade, but it will also hit it.
